Rev. Barbara A. Davis, Pastor

September 30, 2012 PASTOR PEN: Scriptures  from last Sunday sermon, A man after God’s Heart---I Samuel 13: 1-14, Matthew 3:17, &Chapter 17:5, Psalms 51: 1-4, & Vrs 9-10 Romans 3:23, I John 1:8-10, Chapter 2:3.  I Chronicles 7:14, Psalms 103:1-5, Chapter 117:1-2, 107:32, 34:3 and Psalm 22:23----God is still looking for Men and Women who will follow his heart?  Are you that person?

David lived a frustrating life, first in the shadow of his brothers, then constantly on the run from vengeful King Saul. Even after he became king of Israel, David was engaged in almost constant warfare to defend the kingdom. King David was a great military conqueror, but he could not conquer himself. He allowed one night of lust with Bathsheba, and it had disastrous consequences in his life.
Although King David fathered Solomon, one of Israel's greatest kings, he was also the father of Absalom, whose rebellion brought bloodshed and grief.  King David's life was a roller coaster of emotional highs and lows. He left us an example of passionate love of God and dozens of psalms, some of the most touching, beautiful poetry ever written.
David killed Goliath, champion of the Philistines, when David was only a youth and Goliath a giant and veteran warrior. David was victorious because he trusted in God for the victory, not himself.  He killed many of Israel's enemies in battle. Despite several opportunities, David refused to kill King Saul, God's first anointed king, who was pursuing David out of mad jealousy.  He became friends, like brothers, with Saul's son Jonathan, setting a model of friendship that everyone can learn from.
King David is included in the "Faith Hall of Fame" in Hebrews 11.  David was an ancestor of Jesus Christ. Jesus was often called "Son of David." God called David a man after his own heart. Because of David’s honest-- self-examination is necessary to recognize our own sin, then we must repent of it. We may try to fool ourselves or others, but we cannot hide our sin from God. God always offers forgiveness for our sins, but we cannot escape the consequences.  God highly values our faith in him. Despite life's ups and downs, God is ever-present to give us comfort and help.

Bible Reading 2 John 1:1-13

2 John 1:1-13
1 The elder, To the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth--and not I only, but also all who know the truth-- 2 because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever: 3 Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father's Son, will be with us in truth and love. 4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. 5 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. 7 Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. 9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. 11 Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work. 12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete. 13 The children of your chosen sister send their greetings.

Bible Quote Luke 6:38

 Luke 6:38
Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.

Not Ashamed of the Lordship of Christ

Not Ashamed of the Lordship of Christ

BIBLE MEDITATION: “O my God, I trust in Thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.” Psalm 25:2

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Have you ever noticed that some people get a little embarrassed in a restaurant if you bow your head and mention Jesus as you ask His blessing? They rub their eyebrows or forehead when you pray. Have you ever asked yourself why they’re ashamed? I think it is because they don’t know what they’re missing in Jesus. You see, salvation is a wonderful gift. God sent His Son to die for us. He rose from the grave for us. He ascended into heaven for us. He’s coming again for us! How can we be ashamed of this?

ACTION POINT:
Next time you go to a restaurant, let your prayer of blessing turn into an evangelistic opportunity with your unsaved friend.

Bible Reading 3 John 1:1-14

3 John 1:1-14
1 The elder, To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth. 2 Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. 3 It gave me great joy to have some brothers come and tell about your faithfulness to the truth and how you continue to walk in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. 5 Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers, even though they are strangers to you. 6 They have told the church about your love. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God. 7 It was for the sake of the Name that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans. 8 We ought therefore to show hospitality to such men so that we may work together for the truth. 9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will have nothing to do with us. 10 So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, gossiping maliciously about us. Not satisfied with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers. He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church. 11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone--and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true. 13 I have much to write you, but I do not want to do so with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face. Peace to you. The friends here send their greetings. Greet the friends there by name.

The Rapture of the Church

BIBLE MEDITATION:  “For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
I believe there will be seven years of terrible tribulation. It will be a time of tyranny and persecution. It will be a time when all nature will be out of joint and when demon spirits will infest the world. It will be a time when the Anti-Christ will rule and reign.

But before the tribulation comes, the Church is going to be raptured out. You might find it interesting to note that the word “rapture” is not found in the Bible, but the word “caught up” is, and that’s literally what the word “rapture” means. We will be “caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air” (1 Thessalonians 4:17).

ACTION POINT:
Do your loved ones know what the rapture means? Why not ask them what they think this next week and open the door for a candid discussion about the future?

Lukewarmness—a Form of Blasphemy

BIBLE MEDITATION: “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” Revelation 2:4

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
In Revelation 2:1-7, we read about the Lord’s charge that the church at Ephesus had left their first love. It wasn’t that they didn’t love the Lord Jesus. It was that they didn’t love Him like they used to. If there ever was a time when you loved Jesus more than you do at this moment, you’re backslidden. G. Campbell Morgan said that lukewarmness is the worst form of blasphemy. I believe he’s right. Lukewarmness is a way of saying, “God, I believe in You, but You just don’t excite me.” Oh, how we ought to stay in love with the Lord Jesus Christ!

ACTION POINT:
Have you left your first love? Has your love for Jesus become lukewarm? Pray Psalm 26:2 and seek His face.

Bible Reading 1 John 3:1-24

4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.
The Work of the Holy Spirit
5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."

Love One Another
11 This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him. 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 19 This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence 20 whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24 Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

”Praise the Lord!”

BIBLE MEDITATION: “Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever.” Revelation 7:12

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
I heard about a man who got a little excited in church and kept shouting, “Praise the Lord!”

One day, some of the brethren called on him while he was plowing his fields. When they were finished talking, he hung his head and said, “I know it’s the truth. I have disturbed the services, but you know, I sit there and think what the Lord has done for me, how He died in agony and blood for me upon the cross, how He’s forgiven all of my sins, how He’s filled me with the Spirit, and – here, hold this mule while I shout!”

If being a Christian and going to heaven doesn’t excite you, then you have calluses on your soul. It’s exciting to know the Lord Jesus Christ!

ACTION POINT:
When was the last time you raised your hands and shouted “Praise the Lord!” Maybe right now is a good time!

Bible Reading 1 John 3:1-24

1 John 3:1-24
1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure. 4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. 7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.
Proverbs 3:27

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due,
When it is in the power of your hand to do so.

Why would you ever want to withhold good to those to whom it is due? Not wanting to share, even when it is in the power of your hand to give? Are you jealous perhaps? Envious of those who have earned the good? Or perhaps you feel greed, wanting to keep all your hard earned things to yourself? We must all guard against greed or jealousy or envy for that is not the way of our Lord.

The Whole World in His Hands

BIBLE MEDITATION: “And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist.” Colossians 1:17

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
We sing about the Lord having the whole world in His hands. But do you know what is more remarkable than that? He has the whole universe in His hands.

He’s the One who spoke it into existence. He’s the One who keeps it going. He’s the One who is going to fold it up like a garment and tuck it away in a drawer somewhere. He regulates it; He rules it and He runs it.

When you pick up the newspaper and read something alarming, you don’t need to panic. Instead, remember Who has it under His control. He who flung the stars in space has the whole universe in His hands!

ACTION POINT:
Take the hand of a child today and look at the stars twinkling in the night sky or a flower beginning to bloom. Then share about the awesome Creator and Sustainer of all.

Bible Reading John 18:19-40

The High Priest Questions Jesus
18:19-24pp -- Mt 26:59-68; Mk 14:55-65; Lk 22:63-71
19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20 "I have spoken openly to the world," Jesus replied. "I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said." 22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby struck him in the face. "Is this the way you answer the high priest?" he demanded.  23 "If I said something wrong," Jesus replied, "testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?" 24 Then Annas sent him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.

Valleys and Mountains in the Life of a Christian

BIBLE MEDITATION:  “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Did you know that it is an impossibility of geography to have a valley without a mountain? They are beautiful complements in God’s grand creation.

The valley is the place of vision. It is the place of repose and reflection.
The mountain is the place of discovery and a place to become strong.

If you find yourself in a valley, it is because you have come down from a mountain. If you’re on a mountain, you came to that place by way of the valley.

ACTION POINT:
Are you in the valley or on the mountaintop? Read Psalm 46 about the strength of the Lord. Rest and rejoice in His strength, wherever God has you right now.

Seizing Opportunities to Serve

BIBLE MEDITATION:  “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Do you remember the story of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:30-37? He was on a journey but stopped and helped a bruised and broken man. He didn’t make excuses saying, “It’s none of my business.” It was a golden moment, and he took it.

All around you are people who need the compassion of Christ. They need you to see their pain as a golden opportunity to serve them in the name of Jesus.

The chief enemy to kindness is busyness. We have our priorities, our jobs, our duties, our responsibilities, and we’re too busy. But if we’re too busy to be kind, we’re too busy.

ACTION POINT:
What’s on your schedule for today? If someone had a flat tire, could you fix it? If someone called and needed a ride to the hospital, could you take them? Clear the way for Jesus, my friend.

Bible Reading John 20:1-18

The Empty Tomb
20:1-8pp -- Mt 28:1-8; Mk 16:1-8; Lk 24:1-10
1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" 3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

Rev. Barbara A. Davis, Pastor

September 16, 2012 PASTOR PEN: A large group of European pastors came to one of Northfield Bible Conferences in Massachusetts in the late 1800s. Following the European custom of the time, each guest put his shoes outside his room to be cleaned by the hall servants overnight. But of course this was America and there were no hall servants.

Walking the dormitory halls that night, Dwight saw the shoes and determined not to embarrass his brothers. He mentioned the need to some ministerial students who were there, but met with only silence or pious excuses.  Dwight returned to the dorm, gathered up the shoes, and, alone in his room, Dwight began to clean and polish the shoes. Only the unexpected arrival of a friend in the midst of the work revealed the secret.

When the foreign visitors opened their doors the next morning, their shoes were shined. They never know by whom. Dwight told no one, but his friend told a few people, and during the rest of the conference, different men volunteered
to shine the shoes in secret. Perhaps the episode is a vital insight into why God use the world’s most famous evangelist of his time, and founder of a bible networks, Dwight ( D. L.) Moody as He did. He was a man with a servant’s heart and that was the basis of his true greatness.  Now you know the rest of the story……

JOKE:  A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon. Four worms were placed into four separate jars.  The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.
The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.    The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup.         The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil. At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results: The first worm in alcohol...Dead.
The second worm in cigarette smoke
...Dead.
Third worm in chocolate syrup
...Dead.
Fourth worm in good clean soil...Alive . So the Minister asked the congregation, "What did you learn from this demonstration?"
Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said, "As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won't have worms!"  That pretty much ended the service!

It’s Getting Gloriously Dark!

BIBLE MEDITATION:  “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” Luke 21:28

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
I wonder what would happen if scientists began making a human being from the cell of another human being. We are living in strange days, are we not? But I want to tell you our hope is not to be found in science. There’s no blessing in the book of science. Friend, the blessing is in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

When I see things like cloning come to pass they do not shake me. Sometimes they grieve me or sadden me, but they do not shake me because I know God’s Word.  I know it is the fulfillment of prophecy, and I can say with all of the saints, “Praise God! It’s getting gloriously dark.”

ACTION POINT:
Next time you read something in the paper that shadows the end times, use it as an open door to share the Second Coming of Jesus with someone.

Full Gospel Christian Church Newsletter

Good morning, Church members!

Our Pastor and Sister Helen are away visiting their family in West Virginia. And Sister Betty is enjoying a vacation. We pray that all of them return safely home.

Reminder: We have a Prayer Station page with this blog. If you need prayers for yourself or someone else, please leave a comment. Or if you're not sure how to do it, send an email to Sister Lynda at sflynda@gmail.com I'll put it in for you. Just provide me the name of the person who needs prayers and a brief description of why they need prayers (health, surgery, grief, etc)

At this time, we're offering prayers for

Sister Devria, who will be undergoing surgery on Sept 14
Sister Lorena, health issues
Sister Annie, eye problems
Brother Ron, who lost his wife Joyce

Also pray for a safe journey for Sister Helen and Pastor Bishop who will be traveling to West Virginia this week. And for Sister Betty who is on vacation with her children.

Let's add our soldiers and our nation to our daily prayers. We also need to add the Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans to our prayers - they were killed on Sept 11 in an attack on the Libyan embassy.

Humor corner:

The right word is very important as you will see in this:

Rev. Barbara A. Davis, Pastor

September 09, 2012 PASTOR PEN: The mother of a nine-year-old boy named Mark received a phone call in the middle of the afternoon.  It was the teacher from her son’s school.  "Mrs. Smith, something unusual happened today in your son’s third grade class. Your son did something that surprised me so much that I thought you should know about immediately."  The mother began to grow worried.

The teacher continued, "Nothing like this has happened in all my years of teaching. This morning I was teaching a lesson on creative writing. And as I always do, I tell the story of the ant and the grasshopper:  "The ant works hard all summer and stores up plenty of food. But the grasshopper plays all summer and does no work.
"Then winter comes. The grasshopper begins to starve because he has no food. So he begins to beg, ’Please Mr. Ant, you have much food. Please let me eat, too.’" Then I said, "Boys and girls, your job is to write the ending to the story."

"Your son, Mark, raised his hand. ’Teacher, may I draw a picture?’

"’Well, yes, Mark, if you like, you may draw a picture. But first you must write the ending to the story.’

"As in all the years past, most of the students said the ant shared his food through the winter, and both the ant and the grasshopper lived.  A few children wrote, ’No, Mr. Grasshopper. You should have worked in the summer. Now, I have just enough food for myself.’ So the ant lived and the grasshopper died.
"But your son ended the story in a way different from any other child, ever. He wrote, ’So the ant gave all of his food to the grasshopper; the grasshopper lived through the winter. But the ant died.’
"And the picture? At the bottom of the page, Mark had drawn three crosses."

JOKE:  WHAT A GREAT IDEA!  Here's the way it should be:

Let's put the seniors in jail; and all the criminals in nursing homes.---This would correct two things in one motion: Seniors would have access to showers, hobbies and walks.  They would receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical treatment, wheel chairs, etc.  They would receive money instead of having to pay it out. They would have constant video monitoring, so they would be helped instantly, if they fell or needed assistance.

Bedding would be washed twice a week and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them. A guard would check on them every 20 minutes.  All meals and snacks would be brought to them.   They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.
They would have access to a library, weight/fitness room, spiritual counseling, a pool and education - and free admission to in-house concerts by nationally recognized entertainment artists.

Simple clothing (shoes, slippers, pj's) and legal aid would be free, upon request.
There would be private, secure rooms provided for all with an outdoor exercise yard, complete with gardens.  Each senior would have a P.C., T.V., phone and radio in their room at no cost. They would receive daily phone calls.  There would be a board of directors to hear any complaints and the ACLU would fight for their rights and protection.  The guards would have a code of conduct to be strictly adhered to, with attorneys available, at no charge to protect the seniors and their families from abuse or neglect.

As for the criminals: They would receive cold food. They would be left alone and unsupervised. They would receive showers once a week.  They would live in tiny rooms, for which they would have to pay $5,000 per month, and they would have no hope of ever getting out.

The Impending Great Tribulation

BIBLE MEDITATION: “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.” Matthew 24:21

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
General Omar Bradley said this about our generation:

•    We know more about war than about peace.
•    We know more about killing than about living.
•    This is our 20th Century’s claim to progress – knowledge of science outstrips capacity for control.
•    We have too many men of science, too few men of God.
•    The world has achieved brilliance without wisdom, power without conscience.
•    We are a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants.

I think he said a mouthful. Jesus said there’s coming a time like never before seen in history – the Great Tribulation – when all our progresses and advances will come down to one thing – Jesus Christ.

ACTION POINT:
Ask yourself: Where will you be on the day of Tribulation?
Where do you want to be?

Devotions taken from the messages of Adrian Rogers.

Bible Reading 2 Chronicles 18:1-34

Micaiah Prophesies Against Ahab
18:1-27pp -- 1Ki 22:1-28
1 Now Jehoshaphat had great wealth and honor, and he allied himself with Ahab by marriage. 2 Some years later he went down to visit Ahab in Samaria. Ahab slaughtered many sheep and cattle for him and the people with him and urged him to attack Ramoth Gilead. 3 Ahab king of Israel asked Jehoshaphat king of Judah, "Will you go with me against Ramoth Gilead?" Jehoshaphat replied, "I am as you are, and my people as your people; we will join you in the war." 4 But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, "First seek the counsel of the LORD." 5 So the king of Israel brought together the prophets--four hundred men--and asked them, "Shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?" "Go," they answered, "for God will give it into the king's hand." 6 But Jehoshaphat asked, "Is there not a prophet of the LORD here whom we can inquire of ?" 7 The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, "There is still one man through whom we can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah." "The king should not say that," Jehoshaphat replied. 8 So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, "Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once." 9 Dressed in their royal robes, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the threshing floor by the entrance to the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them. 10 Now Zedekiah son of Kenaanah had made iron horns, and he declared, "This is what the LORD says: 'With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed.' " 11 All the other prophets were prophesying the same thing. "Attack Ramoth Gilead and be victorious," they said, "for the LORD will give it into the king's hand." 12 The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, "Look, as one man the other prophets are predicting success for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably." 13 But Micaiah said, "As surely as the LORD lives, I can tell him only what my God says." 14 When he arrived, the king asked him, "Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?" "Attack and be victorious," he answered, "for they will be given into your hand." 15 The king said to him, "How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD?" 16 Then Micaiah answered, "I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd, and the LORD said, 'These people have no master. Let each one go home in peace.' " 17 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "Didn't I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, but only bad?" 18 Micaiah continued, "Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne with all the host of heaven standing on his right and on his left. 19 And the LORD said, 'Who will entice Ahab king of Israel into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?' "One suggested this, and another that. 20 Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD and said, 'I will entice him.' " 'By what means?' the LORD asked. 21 " 'I will go and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,' he said. " 'You will succeed in enticing him,' said the LORD. 'Go and do it.' 22 "So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you." 23 Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah went up and slapped Micaiah in the face. "Which way did the spirit from the LORD go when he went from me to speak to you?" he asked. 24 Micaiah replied, "You will find out on the day you go to hide in an inner room." 25 The king of Israel then ordered, "Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon the ruler of the city and to Joash the king's son, 26 and say, 'This is what the king says: Put this fellow in prison and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely.' " 27 Micaiah declared, "If you ever return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me." Then he added, "Mark my words, all you people!"

Bible Reading - John 12:1-26

Jesus Anointed at Bethany
12:1-8Ref -- Mt 26:6-13; Mk 14:3-9; Lk 7:37-39
1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages. " 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.  7 "Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "[It was intended] that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me." 9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11 for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and putting their faith in him.
