Rev. Barbara A. Davis, Pastor
Pastors Pen April 28, 2013: Dear Pastor: You often stress attendance (see Hebrews 10:25) at worship as being very important for a Christian, but I think a person has a right to miss now and then. I think every person ought to be excused for the following reasons and the number of times indicated.

Christmas Holidays (the Sunday before & after) 2
New Years (the party lasted too long) 1
Easter (get away for the holidays) 2
July 4th (national holidays) 1
Labor Day (need to get away) 2
Memorial Day (visit hometown folk) 1
School closing (kids need a break) 1
School reopens (one last fling) 1
Family reunions (mine & wife’s) 3
Sleep late (stayed up too long Saturday night) 9
Deaths in family 2
Anniversary (second honeymoon) 1
Sickness (one per family member) 5
Business trip (a must) 1
Vacation (three to four weeks) 6
Bad weather (ice, snow, rain, clouds) 2
Ball games 2
Races 2
Unexpected company (can’t walk out) 2
Time changes (spring & fall) 2
Special on TV (superbowl, etc) 3

Pastor, that leaves two Sundays per year. So, you can count on us to be in church on the 4th Sunday in February and the 3rd Sunday in August unless we are providentially hindered.

Sincerely, A Faithful Member

This letter illustrates a point. Some people will make any and every excuse why they cannot come to church. These reasons, and dozens of others, are being employed on a regular basis in every church. Some people do not like to go to church. They say it is boring. The songs are unfamiliar. The preacher’s sermons are dull or uninspiring. The prayers are meaningless and irrelevant. The people aren’t friendly.

On the other hand, there are those who do enjoy coming to church. To them, church is exciting. The songs are uplifting. The sermons are inspiring. The prayers bring them closer to God. The people are friendly and inviting.

What is the difference? The difference is their motivation for coming to church. We come to church to be in the presence of God. We come to meet with God. We don’t come because of the preacher, or the music, or the people. We come to meet with God. If you will get the motivation right I guarantee you that you will enjoy coming to church. You see:

P.S. - "The reason some have little desire for God’s House on Sunday is because they have had little desire for God throughout the week."

JOKES: 1. HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY? (written by kids) You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming. -- Alan, age 10

-No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you're stuck with. -- Kristen, age 10

2. WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED?
Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then. -- Camille, age 10

3. HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED? You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids. -- Derrick, age 8

4. WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON? Both don't want any more kids. -- Lori, age 8

5. WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?
-Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough. -- Lynnette, age 8 (isn't she a treasure)

-On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date. Martin, age 10

6. WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE?
-When they're rich. -- Pam, age 7

-The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to mess with that. - - Curt, age 7

7. IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?
It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them. -- Anita, age 9 (bless you child )

LWF - The Value of Wisdom

The Value of Wisdom

BIBLE MEDITATION:
“How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!” Proverbs 16:16

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
I was interested to note in the newspaper that several billion dollars was moved from one bank to another—7.5 billion dollars to be exact. And there to watch and protect was an army of one hundred policeman and guards—all with their machine guns, tear gas, and all forms of electronic communications—because, of course, everybody wants money, don't they? People would do anything to get their hands on that money.

I wonder, if they had had a truckload of wisdom going down the street, how many policemen do you think they would have needed to guard it?

ACTION POINT:
It will be a great day in your life when you begin to seek after wisdom with the same intensity and commitment as you seek after gold.

Pastors Pen April 14, 2013:

Me: God, can I ask You a question?
God: Sure Me: Promise You won't get mad God: I promise
Me: Why did You let so much stuff happen to me today?
God: What do u mean? Me: Well, I woke up late
God: Yes
Me: My car took forever to start
God: Okay
Me: at lunch they made my sandwich wrong & I had to wait
God: Huummm
Me: On the way home, my phone went DEAD, just as I picked up a call
God: All right
Me: And on top of it all off, when I got home ~I just want to soak my feet
in my new foot massager & relax. BUT it wouldn't work!!! Nothing went
right today! Why did You do that?
God: Let me see, the death angel was at your bed this morning & I had to
send one of My Angels to battle him for your life. I let you sleep through
that
Me (humbled): OH
GOD: I didn't let your car start because there was a drunk driver on your
route that would have hit you if you were on the road.
Me: (ashamed)
God: The first person who made your sandwich today was sick & I didn't
want you to catch what they have, I knew you couldn't afford to miss work.
Me: (embarrassed):Okay
God: Your phone went dead because the person that was calling was going
to give false witness about what you said on that call, I didn't even let you
talk to them so you would be covered.
Me: (softly): I see God
God: Oh and that foot massager, it had a shortage that was going to throw
out all of the power in your house tonight. I didn't think you wanted to be in
the dark.
Me: I'm Sorry God
God: Don't be sorry, just learn to Trust Me.... in All things, the Good & the bad.
Me: I will trust You.
God: And don't doubt that My plan for your day is Always Better than your plan.
Me: I won't God. And let me just tell you God, Thank You for Everything today.
God: You're welcome child. It was just another day being your God and I
Love looking after My Children...

JOKES: One day my Gramma was out, and my Grampa was in charge of me.
I was maybe 2 1/2 years old. Someone had given me a little 'tea set' as a gift,
and it was one of my favorite toys. Grampa was in the living room engrossed
in the evening news when I brought him a little cup of 'tea', which was just
water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my
Gramma came home.

My Grampa made her way in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea,
because it was 'just the cutest thing!' Gramma waited, and sure enough, here
I came down the hall with a cup of tea for Grampa, and she watched him drink it up.

Then she said, (as only a gramma would know), "'Did it ever occur to you that
the only place she can reach to get water is the toilet?"

FYI: THANK YOUS!!! A great big thank you goes out to David, Bill and Cody

LWF - Passionate Prayer

Passionate Prayer

BIBLE MEDITATION:
“Who in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto Him that was able to save Him from death, and was heard in that He feared.” Hebrews 5:7

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
I read in the book of Hebrews how my Savior prayed with “strong cryings and tears.” How that rebukes me. When is the last time you shed a tear over some soul that was mortgaged to the devil? When is the last time that you, like Jacob, said, “Oh God, I will not let You go, except You bless me” (Genesis 32:26)? When is the last time you labored with God in prayer as the Bible says?

Prayer is hard work! For the energy it takes, I’d rather preach than pray. I’d rather study than pray. It takes work to pray. And here’s a man—our Savior— Who was praying passionately. He cast himself upon the ground. We need that kind of passion in our prayers.

The effect of my preaching is not measured by how my sermons are outlined or illustrated, but by the power of Almighty God upon my life because I’ve been alone with God in prayer.

ACTION POINT:
Jesus knew what it was to get alone with God in prayer. Do you know what it is?

vs
Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone?
What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?
What if we flipped through it several times a day?
What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?
What if we used it to receive messages from the text?
What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it?
What if we gave it to Kids as gifts?
What if we used it when we traveled?
What if we used it in case of emergency?

This is something to make you go....hmm...where is my Bible?

Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don't have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill. Makes you stop and think 'where are my priorities? And no dropped calls! When Jesus died on the cross, he was thinking of you! R U THINKING OF HIM!
Psalms 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

LWF - Confessing Your Faults

Confessing Your Faults

BIBLE MEDITATION:
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed…” James 5:16

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Most of us are not very good at confessing our faults. We’re pretty good at criticizing our friends, and we’re very good at castigating our foes; but we’re also very good about concealing our faults, right?

To err is human, and to cover it up is, too. We don’t want anybody to know we have any faults. But let me tell you something. If you study the history of revival, you’ll find out that great revivals are not necessarily marked with great singing or great preaching, but with great confession of sin—not only to God but to one another. Where God’s people are broken, God seems to move. Think of the things that can take place when we confess our faults.

ACTION POINT:
Is there something God is bringing to your mind right now that you need to confess to Him? Is there a confession you need to make to someone else? When we go to our brother and say, “I have sinned against God and I’ve sinned against you, and I want to confess my faults to you,” don’t you know, dear friend, that heaven begins to rejoice? The angels begin to sing because there is fellowship and there is reconciliation. There can be no reconciliation when a wrong is done until there is confession.

Pastors Pen April 7, 2013: Celebrating The Resurrection!

Jesus had no servants, yet they called Him Master.
Had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher.
Had no medicines, yet they called Him Healer.
Had no army, yet kings feared Him.
He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world.
He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him.
He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today.

Living the hope of Easter: We need to remember that Easter isn't just about something that happened about 2,000 years ago, as eternally significant as that is. It's not even just about what will happen at some time in the future, although that's the essence of our hope. It's about, in a very real way, what's happening right now in our lives. Speaking of Christ, Peter tells us, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, ." (1 Peter 1:3.)

When Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10) he was talking about the here-and-now as well as the hereafter. God wants you to reach out and grab that "hope" that He's provided. He wants you to "live" that hope. And, in turn, He wants to bless you for living for Him.

This "living hope" is powerful evidence that Christ is alive and working on, in and through His church, the body of believers. If you're a Christian, that includes you!

Bill and Gloria Gaither's classic song, "Because He Lives," really explains simply and to-the-point the essence of this "living hope" that we as Christians can enjoy:

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow, Because He lives, all fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living, just because He lives.

Christ rose from the tomb to give us a living hope. The evidence of that is all around us. Just ask those for whom the power of a risen Christ has completely transformed their lives. Just ask those who have seen the power of God perform miracles in their lives. Just ask those who now have living hope, who once merely existed day-to-day in hopelessness. Just ask those who have learned what it is to have what Christ promised– life, and life more abundant. Just ask those for whom life has truly become worth living. And it's all ... because He lives.

JOKES: Submitted by Rev. Jack Murphy:YOUNG GIRL ON AN AIRPLANE
An atheist was seated next to a young girl on an airplane and he turned to her and said, "Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger."

The young girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total stranger, "What would you want to talk about?" "Oh, I don't know," said the atheist. "How about why there is no God, or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death?" as he smiled smugly.

"Okay," she said. "Those could be interesting topics but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?"

The atheist, visibly surprised by the young girl's intelligence, thought about it and said "Hmmm, I have no idea." To which the little girl replied, "Do you really feel qualified to discuss God, Heaven and Hell, or life after death, when you don't know Poop?! And then she went back to reading her book.

FYI BIG THANK YOU: Bill, Cody, David and Davey showed up for the work meeting, they did a great job raking the front and side yard, May God bless each of them very good, for caring for the house of God!!!!

Why did Dale stare at the Orange Juice Carton,: because it said "Concentrate" Happy Birthday to my favorite target!!!!

Untapped Power

Untapped Power

BIBLE MEDITATION:
“…ye have not, because ye ask not.” James 4:2

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
A little boy was trying with all his might to move a huge stone. His little muscles were bulging, and there was perspiration on his face. His father, who was watching, said to him, “Son, are you using all of your strength?” And the little boy said, “Yes, Daddy, I’m using all of my strength.” And his dad said, “No, you’re not. You haven’t asked me to help you.”

ACTION POINT:
Sometimes we’re burdened down with weighty problems, and we strive, we cry, and say, “I’m doing everything I know to do!” Have you asked your Father to help? Have you linked your life with His? Could it be that God wants to bless you, and the reason God is not blessing you could be so utterly simple. “You have not because you ask not.”
