The Claims of Jesus About Himself
48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?" 49 "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." 52 At
this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed!
Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps
your word, he will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?" 54 Jesus
replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom
you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." 57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" 58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Bible Reading John 7:25-53
Is Jesus the Christ?
25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill? 26 Here
he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have
the authorities really concluded that he is the Christ ? 27 But we know where this man is from; when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from." 28 Then
Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, "Yes, you know
me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own, but he who
sent me is true. You do not know him, 29 but I know him because I am from him and he sent me." 30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come. 31 Still,
many in the crowd put their faith in him. They said, "When the Christ
comes, will he do more miraculous signs than this man?" 32 The
Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the
chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him. 33 Jesus said, "I am with you for only a short time, and then I go to the one who sent me. 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come." 35 The
Jews said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we
cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the
Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, 'You will look for me, but you will not find me,' and 'Where I am, you cannot come'?" 37 On
the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud
voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." 39 By
this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to
receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had
not yet been glorified. 40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, "Surely this man is the Prophet." 41 Others said, "He is the Christ." Still others asked, "How can the Christ come from Galilee? 42 Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David's family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?" 43 Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders
45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him in?" 46 "No one ever spoke the way this man does," the guards declared. 47 "You mean he has deceived you also?" the Pharisees retorted. 48 "Has any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law--there is a curse on them." 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51 "Does our law condemn anyone without first hearing him to find out what he is doing?" 52 They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee." 53 Then each went to his own home.

Barbara A. Davis, Pastor
August 26, 2012 PASTOR PEN: Old Guy And A Bucket Of Shrimp---It happened every Friday evening, almost without fail, when the
sun resembled a giant orange and was starting to dip into the blue ocean. Old Ed came strolling along the beach to his
favorite pier. Clutched in his bony hand
was a bucket of shrimp. Ed walks out to the end of the pier, where it seems he
almost has the world to himself. The glow of the sun is a golden bronze now. Everybody's gone, except for a few joggers on
the beach. Standing out on the end of the pier, Ed is alone with his thoughts...and
his bucket of shrimp.
Before long, however, he is no longer alone. Up in the sky a thousand white dots come screeching and squawking, winging their way toward that lanky frame standing there on the end of the pier. Before long, dozens of seagulls have enveloped him, their wings fluttering and flapping wildly. Ed stands there tossing shrimp to the hungry birds. As he does, if you listen closely, you can hear him say with a smile, 'Thank you. Thank you.' In a few short minutes the bucket is empty. But Ed doesn't leave. He stands there lost in thought, as though transported to another time and place.
When he finally turns around and begins to walk back toward the beach, a
few of the birds hop along the pier with him until he gets to the stairs,
and then they, too, fly away. And old Ed quietly makes his way down to the
end of the beach and on home.
If you were sitting there on the pier with your fishing line in the water,
Ed might seem like 'a funny old duck,' as my dad used to say. Or, 'a guy
who's, an order of fries short of a happy meal,' as my kids might say. To onlookers, he's just another old codger, lost in his own weird world, feeding the seagulls with a bucket full of shrimp. To the onlooker, rituals can look either very strange or very empty. They can seem altogether unimportant.... maybe even a lot of nonsense. Old folks often do strange things, at least in the eyes of Boomers and Busters.
Most of them would probably write Old Ed off, down there in Florida. That's too bad. They'd do well to know him better. His full name: Eddie Rickenbacker. He was a famous hero back in World War II. On one of his flying missions across the Pacific, he and his seven-member crew went down. Miraculously, all of the men survived, crawled out of their plane, and climbed into a life raft.
Captain Rickenbacker and his crew floated for days on the rough waters of
the Pacific. They fought the sun. They fought sharks. Most of all, they
fought hunger. By the eighth day their rations ran out. No food. No water.
They were hundreds of miles from land and no one knew where they were.
They needed a miracle. That afternoon they had a simple devotional service and prayed for a miracle. They tried to nap. Eddie leaned back and pulled his military cap over his nose. Time dragged. All he could hear was the slap of the waves against the raft. Suddenly, Eddie felt something land on the top of his cap. It was a seagull!
Old Ed would later describe how he sat perfectly still, planning his next
move. With a flash of his hand and a squawk from the gull, he managed to
grab it and wring its neck. He tore the feathers off, and he and his
starving crew made a meal - a very slight meal for eight men - of it. Then
they used the intestines for bait. With it, they caught fish, which gave
them food and more bait.......and the cycle continued. With that simple survival technique, they were able to endure the rigors of the sea until they were found and rescued (after 24 days at sea...).
Eddie Rickenbacker lived many years beyond that ordeal, but he never forgot the sacrifice of that first life-saving seagull... And he never stopped
saying, 'Thank you.' That's why almost every Friday night he would walk to
the end of the pier with a bucket full of shrimp and a heart full of
gratitude.

To Be Found in Christ
To Be Found in Christ
BIBLE MEDITATION: “But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.” 1 Corinthians 1:30DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Paul thought it was the greatest of blessings to be found “in Him” (see Philippians 3:9). Paul exchanged a set of rules for a friend.
Hadn’t you rather have a friend than a set of rules? Before this, Paul had the law. Now, he has the Lord. And what a difference! What a safe place—to be found in Jesus Christ.
You’re not just a church member if you are saved, you are in Christ. You are in His body and He is in you. Talk about fellowship divine! You may be alone, but you’ll never be lonely again because the Lord Jesus Christ is in you and you are in the Lord Jesus Christ.
ACTION POINT:
If you have a hymnal in your home, find the hymn “In The Garden” and meditate on its truth, that “He tells me I am His own.”

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
6:1-13pp -- Mt 14:13-21; Mk 6:32-44; Lk 9:10-17
1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he had performed on the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Feast was near. 5 When
Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to
Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?" 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!" 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, 9 "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?" 10 Jesus
said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that
place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. 11 Jesus
then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were
seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14 After
the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say,
"Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world." 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

Peace, Be Still
Peace, Be Still
BIBLE MEDITATION: “Keep me as the apple of the eye…hide me under the shadow of Thy wings.” Psalm 17:8DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Charles Wesley was walking through the woods on a stormy day when a lightening storm broke out and the rain began to come down in torrents. A bolt of lightening flashed, and a little bird was so frightened that it flew down to Wesley and it tried to hide in his coat.
He was so moved by the scene that he wrote a song we often sing: “Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to Thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Savior, hide, ‘til the storm of life is past; safe unto the haven guide me, O receive my soul at last.” That’s what our Lord does. He hides us, sustains us, and keeps us.
ACTION POINT:
Are the storms of life raging around you? Hide yourself in the dark clouds—they are just the shadow of His wing.

2012 PASTOR PEN: In Honor of Rev. Charles R. Brown a veteran of both the United
States and the Greatest Army of the Lord Jesus Christ: Flag Folding & The Meaning of Each Fold! Unknown----I guess this settles the "One
Nation Under God" debate once and
for all. Do you know that at military funerals, the 21 gun salute stands for
the sum of the numbers in the year 1776? Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays
meticulous attention correctly folding the American flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the
original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day!
The 1st fold of our flag is a symbol of life.
The 2nd fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
The 4th fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance.
The 5th fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decaur, "Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.
The 6th fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that We pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America, and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.
The 7th fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.
The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.
The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.
The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews’ eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians’ eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nation’s motto, "In God We Trust." After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever
reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.
There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you’ll see flags folded and now you will know why.

JOKE OF THE
WEEK: A redhead, brunette and blonde were on their way to
Heaven.
God told them the stairway to Heaven was 1000
steps, and on every 5th step He’d tell them a joke. But, they must not laugh or
else they couldn’t enter heaven.
The brunette went first and started laughing
on the 65th step, so she could not enter Heaven.
The redhead went next and started laughing on
the 320th step, so she could not enter Heaven either.
Then, it was the blonde’s turn. When she got
to the 999th step, she started laughing.----“Why are you laughing?” God asked.
“I didn’t tell a joke.”
“I know,” the blonde replied. “I just got the
first one.”

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman
1 The Pharisees heard
that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, 2 although in
fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. 3 When the Lord learned
of this, he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. 4 Now he had to go
through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot
of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there, and
Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the
sixth hour. 7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her,
"Will you give me a drink?" 8 (His disciples had gone into the town
to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a
Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not
associate with Samaritans. ) 10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift
of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he
would have given you living water." 11 "Sir," the woman said,
"you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get
this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the
well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and
herds?" 13 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be
thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to
eternal life." 15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so
that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water." 16
He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back." 17 "I have
no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you
say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the
man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite
true." 19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a
prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the
place where we must worship is in Jerusalem." 21 Jesus declared,
"Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father
neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you
do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet
a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the
Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father
seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in
truth." 25 The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ)
"is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." 26 Then
Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."

Casting Our Burdens at His Feet
Casting Our Burdens at His Feet
BIBLE MEDITATION: “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” Psalm 55:22DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
I read about a man who had a very fine dog who loved the water. One day the dog was playing in the lake and the man decided to leave. He called the dog, but the dog wouldn’t come. He called him several times; he wouldn’t come. It was a well-trained dog, but he just would not come. The man finally threw a stick out in the water. When the dog saw it, he swam over, got the stick, and came back and laid it at his master’s feet.
It just may be that God has given you a burden because He can’t get your attention. He wants you to come and lay it at your Master’s feet.
ACTION POINT:
Is your heart aching today? Cast your burden at His feet and allow His peace to fill your heart.

Faithful in Little and Much
Faithful in Little and Much
BIBLE MEDITATION: “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much.” Luke 16:10DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
What would you do if you had a million dollars? Well, let me tell you a good test of what you would do—it’s what you’re doing with that hundred dollars you have right now. Are you saving it? Spending it? Sharing it?
The test of what you would do in the spiritual realm is seen by what you do in the physical realm. Many of us do not have spiritual blessings because we simply haven’t been faithful with the small things in our lives.
ACTION POINT:
Are you hoping for something in your life? How could you be faithful in something little so that you’ll be faithful when the other comes along?

2012 PASTOR PEN: THIS
MAN SURE HAS A GOOD VIEW OF WHAT’S HAPPENING TO OUR COUNTRY!
'Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable... We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self- esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and
called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored
values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from sin and Set us free. Amen!' With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we once again can be called 'One nation under God!'

Happiness vs. Joy
“Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.” Philippians 4:4
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Happiness comes from outside circumstances. Joy comes from within. So it’s cruel to say to people who are in sorrow, “Smile and be happy.” Better to come alongside and mourn with them than to try to force the square peg of happiness into a round hole of sorrow.
The human life is a life of tragedy, sorrow, heartache, and pain. Yet in every difficulty, you can find joy. Happiness is an outside job. Joy is an inside job.
ACTION POINT:
There is someone in a nursing home that longs for that joy. Find some time this week to bring the joy of the Lord to them.

Carrying Our Own Burdens
Carrying Our Own Burdens
BIBLE MEDITATION:“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee.” Psalm 55:22
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
A man was carrying a heavy load of grain down a country road. Another man in a wagon being pulled by a horse saw the man walking and said to him, “Mister, you need a ride?” And so the man got in the wagon. But he kept the load of grain on his shoulder. The wagon driver said, “Man, put that down and relax!” The rider said, “Oh no. It’s enough for you to carry me without having you carry this too.”
Have you ever done that to the Lord? You say, “Lord, I’ll let You save me, but I’ll carry my own burdens.” How foolish we are to do this with the God who hung the stars and planets.
ACTION POINT:
If you can trust God to save you from hell, don’t you think you can cast your burden upon the Lord right now?

One Body In Christ
One Body In Christ
BIBLE MEDITATION:“So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.” Romans 12:5
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
My left hand is a member of my body. So is my right hand. The right hand cannot direct the left hand and vice versa. But both hands can receive instruction from the head. If one hand is connected to the head and the other hand is connected to the head, then it simply follows that our hands are going to submit one to another. They’re not going to fight one another.
It’s the same way in the Body of Christ—the church. Who is the head of the body? The Lord Jesus Christ. Who are the members of the body? You and I. God put us in the church together that we might have a spirit of submission in the fear of the Lord.
ACTION POINT:
Is there someone in the church with whom you’re having difficulties? Submit yourself to the Lord and allow Him to give you grace to submit one to another.
Devotions taken from the messages of Adrian Rogers.
